I've been a R&D (Research & Development) franchise manage for my whole career. This is a very exciting role that lead the internal product design, be on bridging role to connect technical organization and commercial team, lead the project management from initiate to success, participate in the launch pipeline decision. The most exciting and passionate to me is to learn from consumers. It is always from them that we get insights & inspiration, linking them to any technology, product and to create new initiative, concept, innovation are the most thrilling part. Not a lot companies has the role of R&D franchise, but I do see a lot companies begin to emerge such roles. The essence is to link technical with commercial based on customer/consumer needs. However, the most complete franchise role is defined in my first company, which I did learnt a lot. And I would say it's the secret weapon to enable them to be the leading consumer goods company worldwide. Here is my own understanding the role of R&D franchise, see if matches what you need or if you can find the value in your organization.
A R&D franchise role is: •A project based CEO •Business person in Technical Organization •Technical person with Business Knowledge •A Representative of Consumer •A Bridge of Business, Technical and Consumer •A Project Director, Owner, Leader •A Forefront Discoverer
In an organization, R&D franchise is the linkage between various technical organizations. If we can say the technical organization or role divides into two roles: design and deliver; then R&D franchise is the core in design and impact and engage in the delivery stage management. Outside of technical function, R&D franchise is the bridge to commercial team and consumer. R&D franchise led the consumer study strategy partnering with the so called technical consumer learning team in the organization; and lead the transfer to learning into insight then interpret into commercial language to drive business. Net, R&D franchise links the consumer, technology and business 3 in one.
